It’s no secret that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. Yet, so many people that I know refuse to eat breakfast. Like it says in the name breakfast breaks the fast from sleeping. Breakfast is essential for providing glucose (or energy) to start your day off right. I don’t mean to get all scientific but studies show that those who do not eat breakfast tend to have less energy throughout the day. There are so many reasons why breakfast is important but you can read this article to learn more.
Breakfast doesn’t have to be an elaborate ordeal, and as busy college students we simply can’t make breakfast super crazy. Here my top breakfast ideas to get your day started on the right foot.
Toast
Does anyone just start to love toast after not eating it for like two months? But seriously, I. Love. Toast. There are so many ways you can switch this up too! Choose a savory toast with avocado, salt and pepper or a sweet toast with nut butter, bananas and cinnamon. Lately I have been loving a good sourdough bread with butter and a side of fruit. Toast, no matter how you do it, is a great way to incorporate fruits and veggies into your breakfast. I love to included a fruit or a veggie right away in the morning to get important nutrients and minerals.
Oatmeal or Overnight oats
Oatmeal or overnight oats are another great way to incorporate fruit into your diet right away in the morning. I personally like to get prepackaged oatmeal that you just heat up with water or milk. I know a lot of people like to just get plain oats and dress them up as they like. My personal favorite “recipe” is oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, apple and pecans. This is especially delicious in the fall when apples are in season. There are so many recipes for overnight oats and oatmeal on Pinterest so that would be a great place to get inspo.
Breakfast Sandwiches/burritos
This might take a little more planning and time, but breakfast sandwiches and burritos are so easy to meal prep at the beginning of the week. If you take the time to meal prep them, they only take a minute or so to warm up in the morning. I have a whole post about meal prep and how to meal prep breakfast burritos so definitely check that out here. These are super customizable so really you could change it up each week. This is another great way to add veggies to your breakfast. I love adding bell peppers to my burritos.
Smoothies
Oohhh I love a good smoothies. Again, you can personalize it to whatever fruits you like. I am a tropical fruit fan. At pretty much all grocery stores you can find smoothie fruit blends that come with several different frozen fruits. I usually pick up the tropical fruit blend, add yogurt and orange juice and bam you are good to go. Smoothies keep me surprisingly full for a long time and they are packed with nutrients from the fruits.
For extra iron I add spinach, because I have an iron difficiancy, and you can’t even taste it. I am also a big fan of the banana, peanut butter smoothie with regular milk or a plant milk substitute. With this I usually add a scoop of vanilla protein powder for extra protein and vanilla flavor. Pinterest has some awesome recipes!
