Clothes are one of my personal favorite ways to express myself. There are so many styles that people can choose to really show who they are. The one thing that I struggle with is having too many things that I like and also having pieces that only create one or two outfits. In order to make it easier, I narrowed down my items in a Color Palette Closet.
What is a Color Palette Closet?
The basic idea surrounding a color palette closet is you are narrowing down your pieces of clothing in order to simplify outfits and make your closet more manageable. Most people choose between 6-8 colors to keep and then only purchase those in the future.
I found this idea through Bri Hull on Instagram. She create the concept and I absolutely love it.
Everything about this idea is negotiable and up to you. Can’t choose only 8 colors? Pick 9! Is there a statement piece that you love that doesn’t fit in your colors? Keep it and rock it! I like to say that they are guidelines and not rules.
Creating a Color Palette Closet
The process of creating your perfect CPC (color palette closet) is not as easy as picking your colors & going for it. It can take some time and effort to achieve what you are looking for.
I started by pulling out every item of clothing that I owned and sorted it by color. There were piles ALL OVER my room, but it was a great visual of what I had.
Choosing Colors
After doing that, I looked at what I had the most of as well as piles that included pieces that I wore the most. This was my first step in choosing which 8 colors I was going to keep.
I moved piles into a separate area as I “took them out of the running”. First ones to go were colors with only a few pieces, ones that I have had for a while, and ones that I do not wear many of the items.
I will admit, narrowing it down to 8 colors was tough. There were many pieces that I wanted to hang on to, but as I thought about how much I really wore them, it made it much easier to let go.
The colors that I landed on were white, red, neutrals, light blue, navy, pink, denim, and black.
What To Do with Colors That Were Not Chosen
After separating the clothes, I went back through all of the clothes that I did not choose for my closet. They were split into 3 categories: Sell, Donate, & Throw Away.
Clothes being sold were posting on poshmark, facebook marketplace, and sold to friends. This allows me to bring back some money to either use on future clothes or just fun spending money.
I wanted to make sure and donate a lot of clothing as well, as it is great for the environment and the local community. Outside of the traditional Goodwill or Saint Vinny’s, there are always shelters or schools looking for clothing as well. Make sure to check out your local community to see where your items can make the most of a difference.
Overall Experience
Going through my closet makes me feel like I am refreshing my style as well as reducing some of the clutter that I have in my room. The CPC gave me direction as to how to accomplish my goals in this area as well.
I would recommend the process to anyone who wants to focus their style or refresh their closet in a practical way. If you want to see more about my CPC, check out my Instagram reel!
